Israel has intensified military operations across Lebanon as part of a broader regional conflict that has expanded in recent weeks. The renewed campaign includes a series of airstrikes, drone attacks, and limited ground operations targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and individuals associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Israeli officials have stated that the operations are intended to prevent Iranian-backed militant groups from establishing operational positions in Lebanese territory that could be used to attack Israel. The escalation follows a series of cross-border rocket and drone attacks launched from Lebanon earlier in the month by Hezbollah, an Iran-backed armed organization that operates extensively in southern Lebanon and maintains significant political and military influence in the country.
The current phase of fighting has taken place against the backdrop of a wider regional war involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. Hezbollah entered the conflict shortly after the start of Israeli and U.S. military strikes against Iranian targets. Israeli officials have characterized the Lebanese theater as part of the same strategic campaign aimed at disrupting Iranian military networks across the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that the latest phase of operations would involve additional military actions against Hezbollah and affiliated groups. Israeli military statements have emphasized that the country intends to prevent Iranian forces or allied groups from consolidating positions inside Lebanon that could threaten Israeli territory.
Expansion of Airstrikes and Targeted Attacks
Over the past week, Israeli aircraft and drones have conducted strikes across several parts of Lebanon, including southern border towns, the Bekaa Valley, and areas near the capital, Beirut. The operations have included attacks on suspected militant positions, logistical facilities, and locations associated with Iranian military personnel operating alongside Hezbollah units.
One of the most notable incidents occurred in central Beirut, where an Israeli strike targeted individuals described by Israeli authorities as commanders linked to the IRGC’s Quds Force. The attack struck a hotel building in the coastal Raouche district, killing at least four people and injuring several others, according to Lebanese health officials.
The Israeli military said the operation targeted individuals involved in coordinating attacks against Israel. The statement did not publicly identify those targeted, though officials indicated that the strike was directed at members of the Quds Force’s Lebanon command structure.
Israeli airstrikes have also been reported in several towns across southern Lebanon. Local authorities said that a series of strikes in the village of Sir El Gharbiyeh killed multiple residents and caused damage to buildings in the area.
Across Lebanon, the cumulative impact of the latest wave of Israeli strikes has been substantial. Lebanese officials reported that nearly 400 people had been killed in the first week of the renewed conflict, including dozens of children and women, though the figures do not distinguish between civilian casualties and militant fighters.
Ground Operations and Special Forces Activity
Alongside aerial operations, Israel has also conducted limited ground actions inside Lebanese territory. One of the most significant incidents involved a special forces raid in the eastern Lebanese town of Nabi Chit in the Bekaa Valley.
The mission was connected to Israel’s decades-long effort to determine the fate of Ron Arad, an Israeli air force navigator who disappeared after ejecting from his aircraft during a mission over Lebanon in 1986. Israeli authorities have conducted multiple attempts over the years to locate his remains or obtain information about his capture and disappearance.
According to Lebanese officials, Israeli helicopters transported commandos into the area overnight before clashes erupted with Hezbollah fighters and local armed groups. The confrontation triggered a series of airstrikes intended to support the withdrawal of the Israeli unit.
Lebanon’s health ministry reported that at least 41 people were killed and dozens more injured during the operation and the surrounding airstrikes. The Lebanese military said three of its soldiers were also among those killed during the exchange of fire.
Israeli authorities later confirmed that the mission did not recover any information related to Arad’s remains. Officials nevertheless reiterated that efforts to determine the fate of missing Israeli personnel would continue regardless of the outcome of individual operations.
The raid represented one of the rare instances in recent years in which Israeli forces conducted an airborne commando operation deep inside Lebanese territory.
Regional Escalation and Military Responses
The escalation in Lebanon has coincided with rising military tensions across the Middle East. The conflict expanded after Hezbollah launched rockets and drones into Israel in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader during earlier Israeli and U.S. strikes against Iranian targets.
Since the renewed hostilities began, Israeli military officials say hundreds of targets linked to Hezbollah and Iranian networks have been struck across Lebanon. Israeli forces have also warned Iranian personnel operating in Lebanon to leave the country or risk being targeted in future operations.
The fighting has also resulted in Israeli casualties. Two Israeli soldiers were reported killed in southern Lebanon after a militant rocket strike hit a military unit operating near the border.
Hezbollah has continued to launch rockets toward Israeli positions along the border, and the group has reported clashes with Israeli troops in several areas of southern Lebanon. Air raid sirens have been activated in multiple communities in northern Israel during the exchanges of fire.
Lebanese officials say the renewed fighting has displaced large numbers of civilians across the country, particularly from areas near the southern border and from neighborhoods in Beirut’s southern suburbs that have been repeatedly targeted in Israeli airstrikes.
The United Nations and several foreign governments have called for urgent diplomatic efforts to halt the fighting, warning that the continued escalation risks drawing additional countries into the conflict.
As the conflict continues, Israeli military officials have signaled that operations against Hezbollah and Iranian-linked forces in Lebanon are likely to persist. The campaign represents one component of a broader military confrontation that now stretches across several parts of the Middle East, linking developments in Lebanon to ongoing operations against Iranian targets elsewhere in the region.
